The Poetics of Space
Project Two Brief: Produce a soundtrack to a montage of still photographs
In your assigned Poetics of Space production teams you are required to create a montage of stills with sound. You need to photograph 10-20 images for your montage and record a 2-3 minute soundtrack. ‘A Meeting’ is the theme for your project. While you can decide to use a narrative structure, this is not a necessity. It is crucial that you use sound to ‘widen’ the world within the frames of your stills and ‘deepen’ the viewer’s experience of your montage.
Aim of the exercise
This exercise is designed for you to continue the exploration of the relationship between sound and image in a time-based production.
Your Goals should be to:
- Create a narrative/situation that engages the viewer
- Use sound to extend the images beyond the frame
- Give a sense of geographical location
Your Soundscape needs to:
- Consider the various sonic categories that make up a soundtrack
- Contain no audio gaps or moments of silence
- Be mixed to a legal level (-10 dbfs)
Important:
Use very little dialogue, if any. Do not use any narration and or music soundtrack. You could include a limited amount of diegetic music in your soundscape.
Key Steps:
- Consider the group work on your previous project. What went well, what were the difficulties and how can you avoid these in the future?
- Discuss ideas for the project. Brainstorm and document your ideas. Make notes of every response you consider on EDMODO.
- Research a wide range of soundtracks and photography projects, once you have decided on an idea. Don’t forget to document your research on EDMODO.
- Consider the interplay between images and sound.
- Plan your photo-shoot and the recording of your soundtrack, book equipment, etc, and complete production paperwork for both recording and shoot: Risk Assessment, Call Sheet & Production Approval Form. This needs to be done online and posted on EDMODO.
- Photograph your stills, record your soundtrack and edit your project using Adobe Premiere video editing software with appropriate technical consideration.
Edit & Delivery of Project
Settings for Adobe Premiere for this project are on MyUCA. To keep the full HD resolution this project needs to be saved on a hard-drive (not DVD) and copied onto my hard drive before the presentation.
